4. Bunaken


Bunaken is an island of 8 km², part of the Bunaken National Marine Park. Bunaken is located at the northern tip of the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. It belongs administratively to the municipality of Manado.

Bunaken National Park extends over an area of 890.65 km² of which only 3% is terrestrial, including Bunaken Island, as well as the islands of Manado Tua, Mantehage, Nain and Siladen.

The waters of Bunaken National Marine Park are up to 1,566 m deep in Manado Bay, with temperatures ranging between 27 to 29 °C. It has a high diversity of - corals, fish, echinoderms or sponges. Notably, 7 of the 8 species of giant clams that occur in the world, occur in Bunaken. It also claims to have seven times more genera of coral than Hawaii, and has more than 70% of all the known fish species of the Indo-Western Pacific. Bunaken marine park has a 20 point dive (dive spot) with varying depths up to 1344 meters. Of the 20 point dive, 12 points are located around Bunaken Island. Twelve point dive is the most frequently visited by divers and lovers of the beauty of the underwater scenery. Most of the 12 point dive in Bunaken Island lined up from the southeast to the northwest of the island. In this region there are great underwater walls, also called the hanging walls, or a giant rock walls that stand vertically and curved upward.

How to get there :
- You can take flight from Jakarta or Surabaya to Manado. Plane ticket cost about 100 dollars one way in low season. The flight is about 6 hours. As a place that has been widely recognized internationally, transportation access to the tourist attractions Bunaken Marine Park is very easy. Manado City with Sam Ratulangi airport is connected with several other cities in Indonesia, such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar, Balikpapan and Makassar. Besides Sam Ratulangi airport also serves direct flights from abroad like Singapore, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, and Davao, Philippines.
- To reach Bunaken Island from Manado you can use boat. There are two options, from "Bersehati" Market or Marina. "Bersehati" Market rental rate to Bunaken around 30 dollars up to 40 dollars. Rates are more expensive if we depart from the Marina, which is about 60 dollars up to 80 dollars. Alternatively, we can use a traditional boat for 5 dollars/person, it's just that this traditional boat departed only when the passenger is already full.
