3. Komodo


The Komodo National Park is a national park in Indonesia located within the Lesser Sunda Islands in the border region between the provinces of East Nusa Tenggara and West Nusa Tenggara. The park includes the three larger islands Komodo, Padar and Rinca, and 26 smaller ones, with a total area of 1,733 km² where as 603 km² of it land. Komodo National Park was established in 1980 and was declared as a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1991. In 2013 Komodo National Park has been selected as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

The island is famous not only for its heritage of convicts but also for the unique fauna which roam it. The Komodo dragon, the world's largest living lizard, takes its name from the island. A type of monitor lizard, it inhabits Komodo Island and some of the smaller surrounding islands, as well as part of western Flores.

The Komodo National Park is one of the most diverse and rich marine environments in the world, with over 1000 species of fish and 250 species of reef building corals. The park has two distinctly different marine environments in the north and south of the park. And the conditions in the park change seasonally. There are over 50 regularly visited dive sites.

Komodo is an exiting and a very challenging place to dive. Whilst it can be dangerous with strong currents throughout the area. Please be sure to use an experienced  responsible dive operator and check that the dive sites visited are suitable for your experience level.

How to get there :
- You can use the flight from Jakarta via Denpasar to Labuan Bajo which takes about five and a half hours. Ticket price about 130 dollars during low season. There is also a bus that connects Denpasar and Labuan Bajo, while using the ferry crossing. Also available ships that sail from Tanjung Benoa Bali to Labuan Bajo trip takes 1 day.
- At Labuan Bajo there are many dive centers who offering day dive package or live aboard package. While accommodation cost is varies from 15 dollars/night to thousands dollars/night.
