8. Pulau Weh


The island is known for its ecosystem; the Indonesian government has declared 60 square kilometres (23 sq mi) of inland and sea around the island as a wildlife protection area. A rare megamouth shark species was found on shore and the island is the only habitat for the threatened toad, Bufo valhallae (genus Bufo). Coral reef areas around the island are known for their large variety of fish species. Weh Island is also known for ecotourism. Underwater diving, hiking through the volcanic mountain and beach resorts are the main attractions. A small village, Iboih, is known as a location for scuba diving. A few meters from Iboih is the Rubiah islet that is known for its coral reefs. There are also several dive operators in Gapang.

How to get there :
- Get the flight from Jakarta to Banda Aceh which takes about 3 hours. Ticket price about 100 dollars during low season.
- From Banda Aceh to pulau Weh you have two options : 
1. By fast boat ( only 2 fast boat operating ), one departing from Banda Aceh, while the other one departs from Weh Island. Departure time was only twice per day, morning and afternoon at 08.00 pm at 16.00 pm with a price of about 6,5 dollars/person.
2. By slow boat, crossing from Banda Aceh to Weh Island every day. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 13:00 except Friday at 14.00, while on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 and 16:00. Ticket price about 1,5 dollars/person.
- Accommodation in pulau Weh is available at varied prices. Starting from 10 dollars/night to 100 dollars/night.
