9. Derawan


The Derawan Islands are located in the province of East Kalimantan, Indonesia. They include total 31 small islands with some popular islands like Derawan, Sangalaki, Kakaban, Maratua, Panjang, and Samama Island. They are located in the Sulawesi Sea, on the coastal shelf of East Kalimantan.
Located in a biodiversity hotspot, the Derawan Islands feature 872 species of reef fishes, 507 species of coral, and invertebrates, including protected species (5 giants clam species, 2 sea turtles, coconut crab, etc.). Several of the islands harbor the heavily exploited turtle eggs and yet the largest green turtle nesting location in Indonesia. The coverage of coral reefs in Panjang Island is 24.25 % hard corals and 34.88 % for live coral. Coral reefs in Derawan Island has a coverage 17.41%  of hard coral reef and 27.78% of live coral.

How to get there :
- Get the flight from Jakarta to Tarakan, the major city in northern Borneo (takes 2 hours). Ticket price about 80 dollars during low season.
- From Tarakan airport you can take a cab to Tarakan SDF Harbour. 
Fast boat rent rate from SDF Harbour to Derawan island is about 150 dollars for maximum 6 persons/ boat, and takes about 3 hours.
- Accommodation in Derawan island is available at varied prices. Starting from 10 dollars/night to 100 dollars/night.
