The numbers of grave stones and numbers of persons buried there are unclear, mainly because there are layers of tombs. In spite of this, it has been estimated that there are around 12,000 tombstones currently noticeable, and there might be at least 100,000 burials in all. Based on Jewish religious laws (halakhah), Jews should never destroy Jewish graves and in particular it is certainly not permitted to remove the tombstone. This meant that once the cemetery ran out of space and acquiring additional land was not possible, more layers of soil were added to the existing graves, the older tombstones removed and placed onto the new layer of soil. This explains why the tombstones in the cemetery are placed very closely to one another. This lead to the cemetery having 12 layers of graves.

The most prominent person buried in the Old Jewish Cemetery is the great religious scholar and teacher Judah Loew ben Bezalel, known as Rabbi Loew, who is associated with the legend of the Golem of Praque. Rabbi Loew and the Golem of Prague dominate the legends of this area. In the 16th century, Loew created the Golem, a figure molded from clay from the Vltava River, to help saving and protect the Jews from accusations of murdering Christian young children. Loew introduced the Golem to life by reciting Hebrew incantations and also released it onto the community. The Golem became larger and larger, so the Emperor begged Loew to destroy him. After protecting the Jews from murderous assaults, Loew place the Golem in the attic of the Synagogue, in which its body is believed to rest until present. Loew ordered that no a single person should ever enter into the attic, actually the Nazis were not able to penetrate this section of the Synagogue.
